Youth & High School Water Polo in the Inland Empire: A Parent’s Guide

Parent Guide · June 24, 2026 · 7 min read

If you live in the Inland Empire and your child is curious about water polo, you have a lot of good options close to home. This guide covers how youth and high school club water polo works, what to expect by age group, and how to figure out whether it is a good fit for your family.

Water polo is booming — especially in Southern California

Water polo is one of the country’s fastest-growing aquatic sports. USA Water Polo, the national governing body, now counts more than 50,000 members and sanctions 500+ member clubs and 400+ tournaments nationwide. Southern California is the heart of it all: the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics — the largest water polo tournament in the world — drew roughly 15,000 athletes on 942 teams across 44 venues in Orange County in 2025, a stone’s throw from the Inland Empire.

What is club water polo?

Club water polo is year-round, competitive water polo played outside of the school season. It is where most serious players develop — the extra reps, coaching, and tournament experience are what move an athlete from “plays for the high school team” to “plays at a high level.” At Foothill, we field boys’ and girls’ teams from 10U through 18U.

Age groups, roughly

  • Ages 5–12: Splashball — the fun, shallow-water introduction to the sport, played with a smaller ball.
  • 10U–14U — players learn real positions, rules, and team concepts while still keeping it fun.
  • 16U–18U — competitive teams focused on high-level play, high school success, and college pathways.

Why families choose water polo

Beyond the community and the life skills, water polo is one of the best conditioning sports there is. Players tread water the entire match, and a moderate hour in the pool can burn roughly 500–700 calories while engaging nearly every muscle group — core, legs, shoulders, and back. Parents consistently tell us their kids become more confident, more disciplined, and more connected to a community.

What a season looks like

Because we train year-round, families can start almost any time. Practices are grouped by age and level, and the competitive calendar includes local leagues and tournaments across Southern California. You can always find current practice times on each program page and the season schedule.

Where we serve
